| The 4th Annual Champlain Islands Open Farm and Studio Weekend is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, July 10th and 11th.
Farms, studios and other sites will be open from 10:00 to 5:00 both days. This is your chance to once again tour Grand Isle County, Vermont and “Discover the Heart of the Islands”. More than 50 artists, artisans and agriculturists will open their doors at 38 different sites throughout the county allowing you to see the creative process first hand.
The hosts at these venues will be demonstrating various crafts and skills to include: painting, wood turning, weaving, basket making, spinning wool into yarn, rug hooking and creating artistic stained glass. You will also see artists creating 3-D wire and driftwood horse sculpture, raku pottery and kiln fired pottery, photography, fiber arts, mini-canvas painting, bead jewelry, charcoal and pencil portraits, and much more. You could also learn about tie-die techniques, artisan soap making, hand spinning yarn, the maple sap-to-syrup process, cabinet making, wreath making, cheese making and fly tying. Visit a quintessential Vermont red barn, restored with the aid of several state preservation grants.
Several farms will have fiber goats, dairy goats, cows, horses, sheep, llamas, alpacas, chickens, rabbits and other animals that you can see up close and personal. Several sites will have light lunches available at a nominal price. There is certainly something for everyone. This is an event for people of all ages – kids, grandparents and all those in between.
A map and brochure will be available at many local businesses, also identified by a yellow sign. Even without a map at the start of your tour, the large yellow signs will direct you to general locations and smaller numbered signs will identify specific venues. Each artist on the tour will also have brochures and maps available. Our thanks to over 20 local businesses that have helped sponsor this event.
If you are looking to get some exercise while touring our beautiful countryside grab your bike and tour on two wheels. This year Vermont Bike Tours has teamed up with the Open Farm and Studio Tour. They will provide planning, on-call mechanical and route support, and a “VT Farm Tour” water bottle. There will be three guided tours, 10, 24 and 35 miles, each starting at Snow Farm Winery. Check out www.vermontfarmtours.com for registration details.
